UL Lafayette is a proud Bicycle Friendly University

UL Lafayette is among 38 colleges and universities recognized by the league for maintaining campuses that encourage biking and rider safety. The University recently earned a 2020-2024 bronze award as part of the league’s Bicycle Friendly University program. It also earned the multi-year designation in 2015.

Photo: Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette celebrated a ribbon cutting on March 31, 2023 for the new UL Bikeway Connection, a shared use path for pedestrians and bicyclists who travel between the university’s main campus, Research Park and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun Athletics facilities along Cajundome Boulevard.

UL Lafayette Bike Amenities

  • There are over 2,700 bike parking spots around campus​.
  • There are 5 covered bike parking locations that can each accommodate 20 bikes​​.
  • Bike Friendly Streets​​ with a growing number of bike paths. In 2023 the Fletcher Hall Bike Path and St. Michael St. connection at Ira Nelson were added to campus connecting a full 2 mile bike loop. 
  • There are various bike routes that run throughout campus and connect to UL Bike Route that runs parallel to Cajun Dome Blvd.
  • Two bicycle tire pumps are available for use at the Office of Sustainability (1606 Johnston St.), free of charge to all students, faculty, and staff of the institution. A bike pump will be available at Bourgeois Hall soon.
  • A Bike Repair Station with a pump is getting installed at Dupre Library in Fall 2024!
  • There are 2 Bike Lockers Locations - To rent a bike locker please contact The Office of Transportation Services
    • 10 lockers in Oliver Tower ​
    • 10 lockers in Taft Street Tower​

UL Lafayette Bike Events

  • Bike Repair Workshop at the annual Fête de la Terre Earth Day Celebration in April
  • Celebration of Lafayette's Bike Month in April with Bike to Campus week during Fête de la Terre
  • Geaux Bike, a student organization about biking, who organizes group rides during the semesters
  • Bike Workshops to discuss biking topics and infrastructure improvements

Rules of the Road

  • Bicyclists must obey the rules of the road. This means that a cyclist MUST stop at every stop sign and traffic light. Do not pass cars on the right and do not go through intersections against the traffic light.
  • Ride in the direction of traffic while in the bicycle lanes—do not ride facing traffic.
  • Please wear a helmet 

Protect your bike by registering it with LUS Customer Service at 1875 W. Pinhook Road. Registration Fee: $5:00
