Say "no" to foam!

As of summer 2018​, in accordance with the University’s Sustainability Strategic Plan, expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) containers and serviceware are no longer allowed to be purchased by or for any University-affiliated operations or events.

The University of Louisiana ​at Lafayette continues to progress and strive to be a top University, including in the realm of sustainability.  One of the University's strategic sustainability goals is to become a Zero Waste University.  A necessary step to reaching this goal is having a foam-free campus. 

What does this mean for me?

The Office of Sustainability has partnered with Dining Services to phase out the use of foam serviceware in all campus dining operations.  We ask that your offices and organizations do the same.

Commonly used foam items are cups, plates, and bowls.  Instead of purchasing foam materials, please choose paper versions of these items instead.  Better yet – when possible, use durable items that can be washed and reused!   When ordering food, tell the provider about this resolution so they do not supply you with foam products.

Why is this important?

Expanded Polystyrene, often labeled #6 and referred to as styrofoam, cannot be recycled in any local recycling systems.  Also, the chemicals used in manufacturing this material have additional harmful effects on our environment.  Removing this material from campus will assist the University in reaching one of it's sustainability goals of becoming a Zero Waste University.

What is a Zero Waste University?

 A Zero Waste University diverts 90% of its waste from the landfill by either reusing, recycling, or composting discarded material -- after first taking steps to reduce waste creation at the start.  Not only does this decrease the materials hauled and buried in the landfill, it also reduces the University’s overall solid waste expenditures and negative impact on the environment.
